Modal Auxiliary

1. Must
a. Must is used to express logically probable though we don’t have all the facts and we are not absolutely, but we are preety certain
Example :
- He must have missed the train
- I must say he loooks well
b. Must is used to express necessity
Example :
- She must see the doctor immediately
- I must go to chruch on sunday
c. Must is used to express prohibition or suggestion
Example :
- Don’t walk away in this weather, you must get ill!
- You must say goodbye to every body before leaving


2. May
a. May is used to express speculation about the possibility that something happened or an condition existedin the indefinite situation
Example :
- He may never think that this is a complicated problem
- They may be at home now because today is a holiday
b. May is used to express permission. It is considered more formal and polite than can or could
Example :
- May I borrow your dictoinary?
- May I interrupt you a minute?
c. May is used to express request and wish
Example :
- May I answer your question now?
- May I go home now?


3. Might
a. Might is used to express possibility which is slighter or weaker than may
Example :
- She might not be satisfied with your attitude towards
- They might be able to finish the work in the days
b. Might is used to express possibility in reported speech or in other direct object of noun caluses, when the verb in the main clause is the past
Example :
- Father said we might go to the movies tonight
- He told me I might take this book today
c. The compound oe perpect from to express past possibility or speculation
Example :
- Andy did not come to her party last week; she might heve become angry
- She might been hurt! (pasisive form)
